Connections: The Horse-Human Relationship

Welcome to Flying Horse Stable. Your session today starts with a walk to the pasture where the horses are peacefully grazing. As you approach you see one horse nosing another as if to say, "Come on, let's play," while another horse moves close to his neighbor with ears back, no sound, nose down at the ground. The neighboring horse next to him then moves aside respecting his hierarchy in the herd; and off to the side, two more horses groom each other, such good friends.

On your journey you'll watch the horses for signs of communication as you approach. The ears may go forward, a head may look up alert and yet another may walk right up to you breathe you in and make a sigh. This horse has chosen you to be partners for the day. You'll then put the halter on the horse and walk back to the barn - a new partnership formed.

Once at the barn you will start to groom your horse. What mood are you in, any worries, too much on your mind or are you calm? The horse will reflect your feelings so be ready for some honest feedback. Perhaps the horse backed away, was your brushing too strong or fast? If the horse senses that you are unsettled, the horse will not feel safe. Do some deep breathing to relax and help calm your mind, talk to your horse in a calm voice and reassure him that he's okay. Did the horse move back into you? Your soft gentle touch is working and maybe your horse is even falling asleep.

Now, if you are ready it is time for a challenge. We will have no easy leading exercise today; rather you will have to navigate your partner through a difficult obstacle course. This requires a deep sense of focus and cooperation between you and the horse. You will need a plan in which you demonstrate your mutual trust and respect. Give your partner some positive feedback and feel your self confidence and awareness grow.

Your session may call forward a variety of issues. If so, stop what you are doing and talk about what is happening, work through the issue, make a plan, or decide to take a break. A horse will be patient, forgiving, and offer unconditional acceptance and you will feel the power of the horse human connection.
